BLAC® Black Life, Arts & Culture is an independent Black-owned media platform documenting Black life, culture, history, ideas and communities.
Founded in Detroit in 1999, BLAC began as African American Parent, a publication created to serve Black families with stories and information that reflected their lives. It later became African American Family before evolving into BLAC® — Black Life, Arts & Culture.
For more than 25 years, BLAC has documented the people, places, businesses, artists, institutions and ideas shaping Black communities.
Today, we publish original journalism, profiles, photography, guides, newsletters and community-driven storytelling across culture, business, politics, health, food, travel, beauty, sports, arts and everyday life.
Some stories celebrate.
Some ask difficult questions.
Some preserve history.
Some simply make sure something worth remembering gets written down.
BLAC serves readers who want more than a headline. We believe journalism should provide context, ask better questions and help people better understand the communities and institutions around them.
