It’s spooky season! Is there any other classic way to celebrate Halloween than curling up and watching scary movies? You can enjoy your fright night AND support black artists.

Besides acting, people of color are responsible for other roles in the creation of the terrifying tales – notably writing and directing.

Grab your popcorn and turn off the lights! Celebrate Halloween with these nine films made by black creators.

Bones (2001)

Jimmy Bones (Snoop Dogg) is a cool and respected caretaker of his neighborhood – But he’s betrayed and murdered. Twenty-two years after his death, the once thriving neighborhood is now a rundown slum. Jimmy’s soul returns to clean up the streets and get revenge on those who killed him.

This horror-crime drama was directed by Ernest R. Dickerson. This isn’t his first rodeo. He also wrote and directed the 1992 movie Juice starring Tupac Shakur.

Get Out (2017)

Chris Washington (Daniel Kaluuya), an African-American man, takes a trip to visit his white girlfriend’s family for the weekend. Things take a turn for the worse when he discovers their horrible experiments and treatment of black people.

This movie was written and directed by Jordan Peele. This blockbuster also happened to be his first time directing a major motion picture. It quickly became a cultural hit for its themes highlighting the system of racism and disregard for the lives of black Americans.

Black Box (2020)

After surviving a horrible car crash, Nolan Wright (Mamoudou Athie) is dealt a difficult hand. He loses his wife, struggles to care for his daughter, and develops amnesia. An experimental treatment made to help, instead has him questioning who he really is.

This horror-science fiction film was written by Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour and Stephen Herman and directed by Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour. If you’re interested in cerebral and heavy thinkers – this one’s for you!

The First Purge (2018)

A third political party rises to power in America. They tell the people of Staten Island that if they participate in their experiment, they will get a large amount of money. The experiment? No laws for 12 hours. Dmitri Cimber (Y’lan Noel) and his friends try to survive what’s called the “Purge”.

Gerard McMurray directed this prequel to the Purge franchise. It grossed the highest out of all five movies. If you’re into tons of action and heart stopping moments – this may be right up your alley.

His House (2020)

A young couple (Sope Dirisu and Wunmi Mosaku) fleeing war in South Sudan seek refuge in England. As they struggle to adjust to their new life, they’ll have to deal with more than just racism and hatred from their neighbors. They’ll have to battle an unimaginable evil.

Remi Weekes wrote the screenplay and directed this film. It first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and has since received critical acclaim.

Tales from the Hood (1995)

This horror-comedy produced by Spike Lee consists of four short horror stories with themes based on problems that plague the black community in America. The stories are told by a funeral director to three African-American drug dealers.

The movie was written by Rusty Cundieff and Darin Scott. Rusty Cundieff. Both men are seasoned in the film industry. If one movie isn’t enough for you – don’t worry! Tales From the Hood is a film series that has two additional movies.

Sweetheart (2019)

Washed up and alone on a small island, Jennifer Remming (Kiersey Clemons) must put her survival skills to the test day after day to stay alive. But survival takes on a whole new meaning at night, when a mysterious presence roams the island.

Sweetheart was written and directed by J.D. Dillard. Creature movies seem to be making a comeback and this is definitely a creepy must watch.

Whether you enjoy action, drama, or horror – add a little diversity into the mix this Halloween. These movies prove that people of color have an abundance of talent with a plethora of stories to tell.
