Randy Alan Fisher Unites Detroiters on the Dance Floor

andy Alan Fisher believes couples would be more loving, trusting and open if they were dance partners, so he’s on a mission to teach as many metro Detroiters as he can how to tango-a sultry dance he spent nearly three years studying in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

"The partner dancing element makes people have to communicate with each other more, but not necessarily in words," he says.

He fell in love with dance when he was a young boy, learning the Graystone atop his father’s feet. Eventually learning that the Graystone and tango are "cousins," he decided to study tango in 1992 when world-renowned Argentine tango composer Ástor Piazzolla died.

Now, he’s inspired dozens of people to learn tango in classes he teaches at his eastside Detroit studio. He also takes his classes on the road-6 p.m. on alternating Thursdays at Whole Foods in Detroit and from 8-11 p.m. Tuesdays at Woody’s Diner in Royal Oak

"In tango, a catlike intuitive communication happens," he says. "Some people call it walking meditation. Two people move as one, and it’s very fiery, mysterious, legs flying."
