Eastern Market Partnership (EMP), the non-profit organization that manages Eastern Market on behalf of the City of Detroit has promoted three EMP staff members to key leadership positions including BLAC contributor Laura Gibson to marketing manager and

Eastern Market Development Corporation (EMDC) was established in 2016 to conduct real estate related activities to expand the Eastern Market District, to retain food businesses and to develop affordable commercial and residential space within Eastern Market District. Over the last few years, EMDC has acquired many vacant parcels, worked with the City of Detroit to plan and re-zone the market’s expansion area to create the Food Innovation Zone, and renovated the Metro Accelerator building that provides 15,000 sq. ft. of space at below market rents for emerging, early-stage food businesses. EMP received $12 million from the State of Michigan in 2022 to support building a new wholesale distribution center for Michigan farmers. EMDC will be responsible for developing that project.

Director Of Markets

Lonni Thomas has been promoted to Director of Markets and oversees all public markets operated by EMP. Lonnie was instrumental in the growth and development of the Sunday Market and managed the overnight Wholesale Market in addition to other tasks. Her passion, talent, and infectious enthusiasm have greatly benefited Eastern Market.

Marketing Manager

Laura Gibson is now Marketing Manager after the departure of Sam Morykwas, who served in the position for the past six years. Previously as Marketing Coordinator, Laura worked in the marketing department contributing to the growth of all social media platforms during her two years at EMP. Laura’s keen design sense and eye for a story will serve her in an expanded role.
