We were witness to the work of Monica Brown, owner and operator of M Dawn Floral Design; when she provided a floral arrangement for BLAC’s November feature story on Holiday entertaining. It’s easy to see why M Dawn’s floral events are some of the most sought after in the wedding and event industry here in Detroit.

“There’s lots of competition in Detroit’s event industry. However, I don’t see it as a challenge because I stay in my own lane,” says Brown. “I have my own style of design and connect with my ideal clients through social media and my one-on-one interactions. The ability to connect with my clients is what drives them to want to work with me and send referrals.”

Full Service

M Dawn Floral Design is a full-service floral design company that offers much more than floral arrangements but complete wedding and event planning services. They pride themselves on working with some of the best vendors in the city and proud of their customer satisfaction.

“My design skills have grown which allow me to reach more event/wedding clients who align with my style. The skill and ability to design larger scale designs opened the door for more corporate opportunities,” says Brown. “Over the years, I have been able to increase our minimum budget for event florals, based upon the type of work we wish to do and what it costs to execute that work. I see our team growing over the next year, hiring more freelance designers, as well as day-of event production assistants.”

“As a Psychotherapist, I also see myself indulging in leading meaningful sessions in the wellness community to increase mindfulness through the practice of floral design.”

In addition to weddings and special events, M Dawn Floral Design also deliveries fresh flowers to businesses and residences. “I am a one-woman show, with the exception of wedding/event day. I meet with clients, design the color/floral palettes, communicate with them to discuss the plan, and execute the design process,” says Brown. It can be a lot for one person, but I have learned to be very organized. I plan the logistics, tasks, and set-up/breakdown for the actual event day. These tasks are carried out by my dedicated team of event production assistants.”

Floral Design as Therapy

Brown, mother of son Lucas, found her niche in for Floral Design when working with permanent botanicals at her first wedding in ’01, M Dawn Floral Design, however came after years of working as a School Social Worker and licensed Psychotherapist where she’d journal about what running a successful floral design business. Monica eventually made the transition to running a full-time Event Floral Design Business, securing a location and building a social media following. “My design style and skills have grown which allow me to reach more clients. The ability to design larger scale designs opened the door for more corporate opportunities and over the years, I have been able to increase our team. As a Psychotherapist, I also see myself indulging in leading meaningful sessions with others in the wellness community to increase self-awareness/mindfulness/reduction in stress through the practice of non-professional/leisure floral design.”

Although M Dawn is a successful business, Brown continues to keep her therapist skills sharpened. Designing is very therapeutic and she hopes to create a new phase of her business that teaches others mindfulness and self-care through the act of designing florals.
