Event Details

West Michigan Civil Rights history through two lenses: a grassroots Grand Rapids documentary and a Muskegon building preservation project.

“Documenting Our Civil Rights Stories” is part of the Kutsche Office of Local History’s 14th Annual Local History Roundtable. Attendees are welcome to attend any or all of the day’s panels.

Registration is free: gvsu.edu/kutsche/rt

This panel is from 3:00 – 4:45 pm on Wednesday, March 22, 2023.

It features Rodney Brown (Grand Stand Pictures, Grand Rapids Media Initiative & Film Incubator), Kathrine Kolokithas (Michigan State Historic Preservation Office) and Melvin Burns (City of Muskegon Heights). They will discuss two very different ongoing projects that both aim to preserve Black history and Civil Rights history in West Michigan: a documentary about managerial racism in Grand Rapids, and a state-led Civil Rights preservation project in Muskegon.
