Did you know that coffee, a favorite beverage worldwide, originated in Ethiopia? Legend has it that the goat herder Kaldi discovered coffee’s potential when he noticed his goats acting strangely after eating some berries from a certain tree. Save that for Trivia Pursuit.

With history out the way, we can get on to the fact that November 8, 2022 is National Cappuccino Day, and we want to celebrate by sharing the importance of supporting Black-Owned coffee shops.

In an era where big chains dominate the coffee industry, it can be hard to find a place to get your favorite caffeinated drink that is locally owned. But when you do, you’re not only helping the business owner—you’re also supporting your community and creating jobs for people in your area who need them.

Metro-Detroit is home to a number of Black-Owned coffee shops that serve up some of the city’s best brews, and we want you to check them out. Below is a list of our favorites, so grab your favorite cup and get ready to celebrate!
