Mommy-and-Me Salon Sugar & Spice Caters to the Kids First

Sugar & Spice

Few salons welcome young children. Understandable. Most of us have had an experience getting pampered but being distracting by a child acting in a way that invited some discreet side-eye. Renika Durden gets it, but she also knows that there’s no better bonding time than getting gorgeous with your kid.

That’s why her salon uses the mommy-and-me method, removing the stress from going to the shop with your little one. While mom’s being taken care of, tikes at Sugar & Spice get pampered with a variety of fun treatments like chocolate facials, pedicures, glitter tattoos and more. Party packages are available, too, for mini divas who want to get glam with their friends.

“Sugar & Spice does so well because we designed it with kids in mind first and parents second,” Durden says. “There’s always something fun to do here. Everything goes 1,000% smoother when the salon is actually a fun spot for your kid.”

Durden fondly refers to the salon as her most successful “mistake.” She says, “I put together a party for my niece, and people on social media and Instagram hyped me up so much. I started the mobile spa thing after that.”

And after recognizing the kiddie niche that her competitors weren’t filling, Durden tweaked her business model and opened the brick-and-mortar in Redford earlier this year to an incredible response. Durden plans to expand the salon to be more inclusive to men and boys by hiring more barbers and adding a pirate-themed package to the lineup.
