Delta Celebrates in Detroit

fter 100 years, Delta Sigma Theta's fire for community service still burns bright. Detroit is the 12th stop for the Delta flame on its 22-city Centennial National Torch Tour celebrating the 100-year anniversary of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority and lighting a path to community volunteerism along the way.

The Detroit Alumnae Chapter will host "Passing the Torch and Igniting 100 Ways to Serve" on Saturday, April 6 at 4:22 p.m. at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School. Representatives from local nonprofits will join the Deltas at this public presentation meant to move metro Detroit to serve the community and light a fire under the next generation of Deltas.

This event is the official kickoff of the national Delta initiative "100 Ways to Serve," a city-wide campaign encouraging volunteerism.

Before the presentation, join the Deltas at the Charles H. Wright Museum for the morning unveiling of "Celebrating a Century of Sisterhood, Scholarship & Service 1913-2013," a year-long exhibit of Delta memories.

The flames of the Torch Tour were ignited in California during Rose Parade celebrations and the tour will end in Washington, D.C., during the Sorority's 51st national convention in July.

The Olympic-style torch is symbolic of the role Delta Sigma Theta has played in American history, lighting the way to serve the community. The science and engineering of the torch is a STEM learning project with 500 girls in grades 5-7 at the Detroit International Academy, an all-girls public school.

Founded on January 13, 1913, the Alpha Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta was established at Howard University in Washington, D.C.
