Detroit Vegan Soul sets sights on second location

est Village favorite Detroit Vegan Soul will be expanding to a second location in Detroit’s Grandmont-Rosedale area, the next development in the resurgent northwest Detroit commercial district.

From what we can tell, the new location will be in the place of the Blue Moon Ice Cream shop on Grand River, near the recently opened Pages Bookshop.

As of right now, Ussery-Boyd says everything is in the preliminary stages.

"We closed on the building and have keys in possession. We have not started any renovation yet," Ussery-Boyd says. "Our goal is to be in the position for a soft opening late this year around December, and to fully open next year."

With a vegan spin on soul-food classics, owners Kirsten Ussery-Boyd and Erika Boyd opened their first location in late 2013, garnering praise from both vegans and meat eaters alike. The menu substitutes tofu, soy and other meatless ingredients for staples in Southern cuisine. Since then, we’ve covered the restaurant quite a few times on the pages of BLAC, including a column written by Ussery-Boyd herself on changing the Black community’s view on healthy food.

We get excited when we see Black-owned businesses expanding. Last week we posted about clothing brand Detroit vs Everybody expanding to Southfield. We’re also excited about rebounds in Detroit neighborhoods; Rosedale Park was highlighted in our “Where to Buy Now” real estate guide in the May issue of BLAC.

Ussery-Boyd says they will have more details about the new location once planning is underway. Keep checking back with BLAC Detroit for more updates on Detroit Vegan Soul's latest expansion.
