Eric Sabree named Wayne County treasurer

ayne County Deputy Treasurer Eric Sabree was named Treasurer today, replacing Richard Hathaway who announced his resignation from the seat last month.

Sabree, who has worked in various capacities in Wayne County for several years, won the appointment today after beating out several applicants.

Eric Sabree’s appointment provides continuity in the Treasurer’s Office.  His many years of service in the Treasurer’s Office provides him a wealth of knowledge about its operations,” Wayne County Chief Executive Warren Evans says in a statement.

Sabree’s appointment is historic, marking the first time a Black man has held the office of treasurer.

The treasurer’s seat opened after longtime treasurer Raymond Wojtowicz retired in 2015 after 39 years of service. Hathaway replaced him in the interim, but cited a “private family matter” for his resignation in March.

“I look forward to working with Mr. Sabree in his new role to help Wayne County families remain in their homes whenever possible by improving efficiencies and customer service in the Treasurer’s Office,” Evans says.
