As of this writing, confirmed cases of COVID-19 cases in Michigan have surpassed 33,000. On the minds of many has been a shortage of personal protective equipment – or PPE – for the health care workers on the frontlines of this global pandemic. Detroit-based clothing brand DIOP and Detroit Action have teamed up to provide 5,000 masks to essential health care workers.

ā€œWe want to make sure that we are doing as much as we can to support essential workers in Detroit,ā€ says Branden Snyder, Detroit Action executive director. ā€œCOVID-19 has had a direct impact on our city, especially on vulnerable populations so we are grateful to DIOP for partnering with us to help out as much as we can.ā€

Masks will be distributed by Detroit Action and SIEU Healthcare Michigan. DIOP co-founder Mapate Diop says he’s proud to have the opportunity to support the Detroit community. ā€œThey’ve embraced us from the beginning and together, we’ll keep paying it forward as best we can,ā€ Diop says. ā€œAdditionally, we’re producing nonmedical cloth masks and donating a portion of the proceeds to more intitiatives in the metro area.ā€
