As of this writing, confirmed cases of COVID-19 cases in Michigan have surpassed 33,000. On the minds of many has been a shortage of personal protective equipment – or PPE – for the health care workers on the frontlines of this global pandemic. Detroit-based clothing brand DIOP and Detroit Action have teamed up to provide 5,000 masks to essential health care workers.
“We want to make sure that we are doing as much as we can to support essential workers in Detroit,” says Branden Snyder, Detroit Action executive director. “COVID-19 has had a direct impact on our city, especially on vulnerable populations so we are grateful to DIOP for partnering with us to help out as much as we can.”
Masks will be distributed by Detroit Action and SIEU Healthcare Michigan. DIOP co-founder Mapate Diop says he’s proud to have the opportunity to support the Detroit community. “They’ve embraced us from the beginning and together, we’ll keep paying it forward as best we can,” Diop says. “Additionally, we’re producing nonmedical cloth masks and donating a portion of the proceeds to more intitiatives in the metro area.”
