Shu Foundation hosts fifth annual barbecue benefitting Detroit’s homeless

The Shu Foundation will hold its fifth annual fundraising barbecue this weekend to help feed 10,000 homeless Detroiters.

The Annual Detroit Red Carpet Backyard BBQ serves up thousands of meals annually to those in need. This year, the Shu Foundation partners with iHeartMedia, the parent company of WJLB, WKQI, and other local radio stations, to serve 10,000 meals to those in need at Bert’s Warehouse.

It is estimated that there are roughly 20,000 homeless people living in Detroit, yet many warming centers, nonprofits and other organizations are frequently at capacity.

The Shu Foundation was founded with the goal of tackling the city’s hunger and homeless epidemic. During last year’s barbecue, several Detroit Lions players were in attendance and will be again this year.

This year’s event will have not only free cooked meals, but also grocery giveaways, health screenings, live entertainment and access to human service agencies. Other community partners include GM Supplier Diversity, Forgotten Harvest, Comerica Bank, Rodgers Chevrolet, W3r Consulting, Detroit Central City and more.
