Summer Sips

t is summer time-yes, the season for BBQ’s, picnics and pool parties. With all the fun, I’m sure many of you are looking for the perfect wine to compliment your outdoor occasion.

Here are a few fun tips for selecting and enjoying wine with your summertime fare.

1. Find White Wines You Love

Whites are usually a surefire hit for any summer occasion. Many are drawn to white wines in the summer because they are generally lighter bodied and have a lower alcohol content than their red counterparts. White wines are best served chilled which can help you to cool off on a hot summer day.

2. Try a Spritzer

If you want to add a little twist to your favorite summertime wine, try making a spritzer.  These refreshing concoctions have been enjoyed in Europe for centuries. Not to be confused with a wine cooler, a spritzer is made with carbonated water and a wine of your choice. You can make your spritzer more festive by adding cucumber slices, lemon wedges and even fruit juice.

Here is a simple recipe for one of my favorite spritzers:

Cucumber Mint Summer Spritzer

  • 1/4 part sauvignon blanc  wine
  • 1/4 part sparkling water
  • 1/4 lemon juice
  • 2 slices of cucumber
  • Mint leaves for garnish

3.  Pair bold Reds with your BBQ.

Everyone will attend at least one BBQ this summer. A general rule of thumb is to match the boldness of the meal with the boldness of the wine. So, when you are grilling those big, flavorful steaks, juicy ribs and burgers, pair it with a big red wine. You’re looking for an earthy full-bodied wine to enhance the smoky flavors from your grill.  Shiraz, Malbec and Chianti are among my favorite BBQ wines.

Enjoy!
