The Big Book Store in Detroit to close its doors

t’s a hard time for traditional bookstores, with online services like Amazon and next-day shipping available right at your fingertips. Those shifts led to the shuttering of Midtown’s Marwil Bookstore, the 65-year-old staple in the Wayne State community that closed its doors in 2013.

Now Wayne State is losing another long-time bookstore. The Big Bookstore, which has been in the area since the 1930s, announced that it will be closing its doors sometime this year.

“The closing of The Big Bookstore ends an era of a dozen, once-vibrant – but dusty and unusually dark – bookstores in Detroit that once beckoned the reader and collector to mine their own selections,” owner John King says in an announcement on Instagram.

King’s other locations, John K. King Used & Rare Books on Lafayette and John K. King Books North in Ferndale, will remain open.
