rom Italian-style to Philly-style, sandwiches are a lunchtime staple. Though we really don’t need a reason to indulge, August is National Sandwich Month – so we’re celebrating some of our favorite local sandwich joints around metro Detroit. Give one of these sammiches a try!
Pranzo Sub Bar
Bringing authentic Italian sandwiches to town, newly opened Pranzo serves hot and cold choices on traditional sub bread and piadinas. Try the prosciutto with ricotta, arugula and olive oil served on piadina (Italian flatbread).

Mighty Sub Shop
Mr. Steed’s Steak and Cheese Hoagie might be a crowd favorite, but this spot also serves up tempting veggie, turkey and even hamburger subs.
17602 W. Seven Mile Road, Detroit
Claiming the title “Detroit’s original,” Original Gonella’s has been serving subs for over 75 years. The menu definitely focuses on the meats. If you’re hungry, try an Italian sub with the option of up to 18 layers of Italian meat, topped with cheese, veggies and their homemade dressing. (Visit their newer Redford locale, too.)
295 Oakwood Blvd., Detroit
Don’t overlook Michigo’s grinders. Served alongside chips and a cheese-wrapped pickle, the vegan pizza grinder features dairy-free cheese, pizza sauce, garlic olive oil and your choice of toppings.
