Pinky’s Shuga Shack, Detroit

riving down Schoolcraft Road between Evergreen and Southfield roads, you’re bound to notice the newly-opened bakery, painted bright pink with a black awning. Inside, the floor, walls, tables and chairs all bear the store’s signature and namesake color – pink.

Pinky’s Shuga Shack, with “Shuga” spelled just as the word “sugar” is pronounced in southern states, opened in November with the goal of satisfying everyone’s sweet tooth. Marilyn “Pinky” Walker is the owner of the southern-inspired bakery.

“Most are family recipes. They were all from the south. My menu is dedicated to them and the food I’ve been eating throughout my life,” Walker says.

The menu consists of five different cakes including Aunt Ethel’s Carmel Cake, Red Velvet Cake and a favorite in the bakery, Pound Cake. There are cobblers, like Aunt Annie’s Blackberry and Carrie Lou’s Peach. Ruby Mae’s Sweet Potato Pie and Aunt Cil’s Coconut Pie.

The menu also offers a variety of cookies, cheesecakes, cupcakes, brownies, cinnamon rolls and breads. Even things that are not on the menu can be ordered upon request. If you want it, Pinky can whip it up for you.

“I have a secret ingredient that I put in everything, and my granddaughter teases me, ‘you’re going to put it in that too?’ Yes, I put it in everything,” Walker says.

“I can’t say I love to cook,” Walker says, “but I like to see people eat what I cook. I feel great when I see people eating my food and enjoying it.”
