Rising Detroit singer Eryn Allen Kane performs homecoming show

Eryn Allen Kane has collaborated with Chance the Rapper, Noname and Prince, yet she says the most exciting moment of her career is her upcoming homecoming show on Nov. 23 at the Detroit Masonic Temple.

The Detroit-raised, Chicago-based singer and songwriter is only 26 and already she’s making waves in the music industry. She released her official solo debut EP, Aviary: Act I, in 2015 followed by her first full album, Aviary: Act II, in February of 2016.

She’s been featured on MTV, NPR, The Fader and Essence and was handpicked for an acting role in “Chi-raq,” Spike Lee’s 2015 film. She also collaborated with Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers on the track “Born in Chicago” for the film’s soundtrack.

In short, she’s a pretty big deal.

As for her homecoming show, she says, “I’m so excited. This is my most exciting moment so far in my career. I’ve been in Chicago for so long, I want to come back home and see my family.”

Kane says she plans to play everything off of Aviary Act I and II, as well as a few tributes to the motown greats that influenced her. She also has a surprise for those who attend the concert-new songs she’s been working on that haven’t yet been released.

She says that growing up on Cadieux and Harper on Detroit’s eastside, she was heavily influenced by singers like Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin, especially Franklin’s album “Amazing Grace.”

“I grew up with that music in the background,” she says. “It was always old school kind of stuff.”

As she wraps up her first tour, Kane says she’s pushing for new songs to be released in 2017.

“It’s still going to be soul music,” she says, “but it’s going to have a nice small change from the last [album.] Sonically, I think it’ll be a little more interesting with a little bit of a different feel.”

Her music relies on her wide-ranging vocals to make the soul-infused indie pop stand out from the pack. Kane’s "Piano Song," which was featured on BET’s “Being Mary Jane,” reached #5 on Spotify’s Global Top 50 Charts.

The homecoming show will take place in the Chapel on the third floor of the Detroit Masonic Temple on Nov. 23 at 8 p.m. The show is all ages. Tickets are online only and available here for $19.
