The Detroit Couple That Transformed Palmer Woods with Music

here is no greater example of the transformative power of music than in Palmer Woods, where A. Spencer and Barbara Barefield of the nonprofit Creative Arts Collective have helped revitalize the neighborhood as creators of the Palmer Woods Music in Homes series. In its eighth year, the series attracts local and national performers and exposes the metropolitan area to new cultures while supporting local organizations such as COTS and Alternatives For Girls.

"It's really introduced people from all over the region to this little treasure we call Palmer Woods," Barbara says of the series. "But it has also helped people come back to the area and discover some of the world-renowned talent we have here. And I think it has really improved the quality of life here."

Although they are each dynamic in their respective talents-A. Spencer, a jazz guitarist and composer; Barbara, a photographer and artist-together they are a leading authority on art and entertainment in the Motor City.
